If you don't find what you are looking for, please write to us. We might already have it in our vast inventory supply or might be able to order it for you.

Please look around and tell us what you think or what you would like to see here. We will try to accommodate all requests.

Due to the overwhelming response of our customers on the internet, we are now full-service internet. We no longer run our retail store due to the time limitations and order requests on-line. We do see local customers by appointment only. We still do clock repairs, too. But we don't have the time to devote to the number of responses we are getting through internet transactions and feel we can best accommodate the majority by putting extra service into our Yahoo Web Store. Thank you for your orders, your loyalty, your wonderful emails of praise and for visiting Clock Emporium.

Time is of the essence for clock collectors

FAVORITE THINGS BY DENISE I. O'NEAL

While clock watchers count down to daylight-saving time, which arrives at 2 a.m. Sunday, what better time to take a look at collectible timepieces?

In the 1700s a Dutch sea captain, wanting to carry a bit of home with him on his long sea voyage, made an unusual and unheard of request. He wanted his clockmaker to reproduce a timepiece small enough to carry aboard his ship and stow in his cabin.

The clockmaker put his skills to work and came up with a miniature version of the captain's grandfather clock. The piece introduced key wind movement, allowing for smaller versions of clocks. Up to that point, grandfather clocks or other floor model timepieces that kept time with pendulums or springs were used.

German clockmakers combined the technology of the key wind movement to wood-carved exteriors and gave way to one of the world's most popular timepieces--the cuckoo clock. In 1730, clockmaker Franz Ketterer created the first cuckoo clock, using woods from Germany's Black Forest. The most popular woods to carve these intricate clocks are oak, walnut and maple.

Today's cuckoo clocks can be themed, display motion or play music, all while keeping accurate time.

"People are amazed by cuckoo clocks," said Rita Linda, owner of Clock Emporium. "They are entertaining."

Master European clockmakers such as Anton Schneider (hand-carved Black Forest clocks) and Kieninger (exclusive time-precision mantle clocks) are so circumspect with the distribution of their products that neither maker will sell their products on the open market, and both allow only 100 manufacturers in U.S. to carry their products. Ms. Linda is one of the lucky 100.

"When customers walk into my store, it's like walking into H.G. Wells' Time Machine or an amusement park," Linda said. "They feel like they are in a different world."

Here are a few places to look for collectible clocks:

  • Clock Emporium is another source that carries German and Dutch clocks. Call (954) 752-5340;

  • Hubert Herr Cuckoo Clocks of Germany has it's entire line at Clock Emporium.
  • While finely crafted items such as Hubert Herr, Dold Uhren, Hermle and Kammerer cuckoo clocks are highly desirable, novelty clocks are just as popular. Contact Clock Emporium for all your novelty, mantle, wall and grandfather clock needs. They have more than what's on their website -- just ask.

    Special note: After five attempts, Raggedy Ann finally has been voted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.
